Movie Review: Suicide Squad

I saw Suicide Squad yesterday.  I'm a month behind everybody else but on the up side at least the cinema was nearly empty. There was probably about ten of us in the cinema.

I was a little worried it was going to turn out like Sucker Punch.  Like it looks really good on the trailers and I get super excited then after I see it I'm confused because I'm disappointed but I still really really want to like it.

Well, Suicide Squad is a little better than that. I'm definitely not a film critic but even I can see that there's some things that are wrong with it but overall I found it enjoyable enough to walk away not feeling sorry for myself or my wallet.

Looking at Boomerang I just kept thinking, "This dude is going to die".  There was just nothing in there that made me even want to care for his character. I appreciate the little background peeks into the characters' past lives, but after the nth villain, it just got old real quick.  I've seen the Batman: the Animated Series as a kid, but I've never read the comics so there are plenty of characters that I'm not familiar with.  Obviously, in about two hours of film, some characters would be prioritized more than others.  The film does somehow try to make an effort to make the characters be more than just glorified props, but then it ends up trying to do too much in a very limited span of time.  There are simply too many characters.

The anti heroes versus the villains was such a mismatch that the ending was a given.  It was only a matter of how horrible it would all end.  The villains themselves felt underutilized or maybe their abilities were over hyped.  I kept wondering how Harley Quinn was going to survive given her fighting skills were basically her being crazy.

And maybe because they were pressed for time that the main story suffered. I don't really mind that the story was simple.  I mean, after introducing one million characters, you'd probably have like 30 minutes of screen time left.

The dialogue felt a little flat.  These characters were supposedly the worst of the worst but what they were saying disconnected them from the characters they were portraying.  There was a scene there that was corny and doesn't even try to mask it.  It was so PG13 it hurt.

I would come back and watch a sequel if there were any.  The characters are interesting enough for me to want to see them again.  I just hope they make it less family-oriented.

 The overall aesthetic and mood of the trailer was crazy and gritty and somehow we got less of that.
